HOT SPOTS 1 - BLUE ISLAND
Blue Island, Illinois, one of Chicago's Hottest Hot Spots, is the place tracks from CSX, GT and IHB meet. Power from Conrail, CSX, CN, CP, GT, BN, SF, SP, BNSF, IHB, IAIS, UP, CNW and a variety of lease units make for some colorful railroading. Power from switchers to GP9's, SD20's to SD75's, C36's to AC60's, loads of variety. 11 hours and 47 train movements, not counting METRA on the old Rock Island.

HOT SPOTS 2: BEREA
Berea, Ohio is the point that CSX's Columbus line and NS's Chicago line meet, just to the south of Cleveland. Power is divided pretty evenly between CSX, NS and former Conrail units, plus some run-through power. With 50 movements in 12 hours, this can be a busy place.

HOT SPOTS 3: ROSENBERG
Rosenberg, Texas, about 35 miles southwest of Houston, is one of the last two operating towers in Texas still in their original buildings. BNSF crosses UP's busy Sunset Route, making for some colorful and busy railroading. Both UP & BNSF have small yards here, with locals, and orders are hooped up to trains going from the BNSF to the UP. See all the action at rosenberg from dawn to after dark.

HOT SPOTS 4: BELLEVUE
BELLEVUE, Ohio is one of NS's busiest yards, with 3 major routes leading into the west end of the yard. Taped on a sunny, frigid day in February, 2000, with some lovely late afternoon light. Power is just about everything NS owns, some Conrail, and visits from the Wheeling and Lake Erie, CN and leased power.

HOT SPOTS 5 - SELKIRK, NY
Selkirk, New York is the biggest yard in the Northeast, and is now owned by CSX. We spent two frigid days at Selkirk in February, 2000 to bring you CSX in the snow from both ends of the yard. The west end for the Chicago Line and the east end for the Boston Line, the River Line and the branch to the Port of Albany. Selkirk has always been an exciting place to railfan, and is even more so when the snow flies. Check out the Notheastís favorite hot spot!

Pine Junction in Gary, Indiana is our #6 hot spot, and what a hot day of railfanning we had, with 75 trains in just over 12 hours, has to be our best day yet! CSX, NS and the EJ&E all come together at Pine, plus we saw power from Conrail, UP, SP, CNW, SOO, CP, BN, BNSF, SF, South Shore and Amtrak, and the "J" has orange, green and ex DM&IR maroon. Meets, overtakings and side by sides, 4 trains at once, this really is a colorful, busy and exciting place.

HOT SPOTS 7 - DOLTON
Dolton, Illinois, is where CSX & UP cross the Harbor Belt on Chicago's south side. Dolton, apart from being really ugly,
has a lot of trains and an active tower. I was fortunate enough to be invited into the tower by towerman Ralph on two
afternoons, which was really good, since I got some nice interior shots, and out of the rain. The train of the day is
the bottle train, taking molten steel from one mill to another, in big insulated, I guess bottle cars. I saw power from
UP, CSX, NS, CR, BNSF, CP, IHB, ST.L&H, WC, SOO, and a bunch of leasers. Since Ralph was nice enough to give me lineups,
I was able to identify most trains.

Daggett, California is the point that UP's line from Salt Lake City meets BNSF's transcontinental mainline just east
of the big yard at Barstow. We taped the trains of BNSF & UP from before dawn to after sunset on a superb March 2000 day.
Lots of intermodal, autorack and manifest traffic moving right along, powered by just about everything the two roads own.

O'Fallons Junction is the west end of the busiest piece of freight railroad in the
country, averaging 125 trains a day. O'Fallons is just west of Union Pacific's huge yard
at North Platte, Nebraska, and is the point the Orrin coal line branches off from the
Overland Route. 60+ trains, non stop action.

Cisco is the point in the Fraser River Canyon where CN & CP cross each other and the Fraser on big steel
trestles. This highly scenic location sees plenty of trains from both carriers, CN in particular running
some huge freights. Directional running is now the norm, with westbounds on CP and eastbounds on CN. Two
days of trains!
