NS - The Middle Division - Enola to Altoona

Norfolk Southernís Pennsylvania/Penn Central/Conrail main line, the formerly 4 track ìBroad Wayî. We start at the west end of Enola yard on the former ìIron Bridgeî, then move on to Rockville Bridge, where the main line from Philadelphia joins the Middle Division. We follow the line west to Altoona, with lots of big time NS action, intermodals, manifests, coal trains and Amtrak. Lots of SD70M-2ís and dash 9ís, and some power still in Conrail paint.

Norfolk Southern Beyond Horseshoe

Norfolk Southern Beyond Horseshoe

NORFOLK SOUTHERN BEYOND HORSESHOE

NS on the former Pennsy between Altoona and Conpit Junction. Triple track heavy duty railroading, and a helper district, with sets of SD40-2's doing the honors. There is lots of Conrail blue still around, including an SD80MAC, and former LMS units. There are a number of SD70M's on the property, all with the new style nose, some in primer and some in black, and some in the rapidly disapearing "racoon" or "bandit" scheme. A number of meets, including 2 three train meets. Loads of action.

Hot Spots 4

HOT SPOTS 4: BELLEVUE

BELLEVUE, Ohio is one of NS's busiest yards, with 3 major routes leading into the west end of the yard. Taped on a sunny, frigid day in February, 2000, with some lovely late afternoon light. Power is just about everything NS owns, some Conrail, and visits from the Wheeling and Lake Erie, CN and leased power.

Berea

HOT SPOTS 2: BEREA

Berea, Ohio is the point that CSX's Columbus line and NS's Chicago line meet, just to the south of Cleveland. Power is divided pretty evenly between CSX, NS and former Conrail units, plus some run-through power. With 50 movements in 12 hours, this can be a busy place.

Highball Through The Rathole

HIGHBALL THROUGH THE RATHOLE

Infamous in the days of steam for its long, tight tunnels and tight curves, the Rathole has been modernised and daylighted, but is still a great show. We covered the line from Oakdale TN to Danville KY, we really enjoyed the area, especially the huge rock cuts at Tateville, we even hiked through the big cut at Kings Mountain.

Lynchburg's Trestles

THE POKEY- Norfolk Southern's Pocohontas Division

Taped in the spring of 1997 when the new widecab GE's were out and about in force, both on the point and as helpers. This is coal country, and we caught lots of heavy coal drags twisting through the narrow valleys and bIasting up the grades and through the tunnels that make up this highly scenic route. NS still uses cabooses for back up moves on the mine runs, I was surprised to find them backing up for 15 or 20 miles. Imagine a new C40-9W on one end and a caboose on the other. Also caught a coal train at War Eagle being run around by half a dozen trains. A great show and another of my favorites.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN ON LYNCHBURG'S TRESTLES

NS in and around Lynchburg, Virginia, on the famous trestles in 1992. Possum Creek, the massive James River, curved Beaver Creek, Campbell Avenue, Cotton Mill, the L&D and Harris Creek all make an appearance, together with all kinds of NS power. Our first experience of the South and Kudzu.
