Ohio Central

Ohio Central

OHIO CENTRAL

Where else can you find a GP30/ox-yoke GP10 lashup ambling through bucolic countryside? Or chase top and tailed coal trains with SD40-2's, squeaky clean in their attractive maroon, gray and yellow paint? Ohio Central has to be one of the most attractive regionals around, with a wild variety of power. We spent some time chasing the OC in May, 2005, Zanesville, Columbus, Newark, Coshocton, coal trains and locals in the Ohio countryside.

C420s on the Apache

C420-ALCOS ON THE APACHE AND ARKANSAS & MISSOURI

One of our favorite locomotice builders is the American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, New York, and our favorite Alco is the Century 420. Two railroads roster fleets of C420s, Arizona's Apache, and Arkansas' Arkansas & Missouri. We visited both railroads in 1998 for the pure pleasure of it, and this tape is the result of our journeys. See these pretty locomotives doing what they do best, lugging freight. Both roads keep thier locomotives in immaculate condition.

Winter on the MRL

WINTER ON THE MRL

Montana Rail Link in February, 1997. We worked our way from Huntley over Bozeman Hill, Winston Hill and Mullan Pass, along the Clark Fork with its semaphores to the famous causeway near Sand Point. We had lots of snow, blowing around in the sunshine on Bozeman, sunshine and heavy snow on Mullan, and got out to the old Milwaukee Trestle at Lombard (what a drive on snow covered dirt roads that was). We caught just about all the power MRL has to offer including F45's, GP9's and a caboose, BN power including the new C44's in Heritage paint, and even an 11 unit lashup in heavy snow. Awesome railroad with older power in the depths of winter.

BC Rail

BC RAIL

This trip was the fulfillment of a long time personal ambition. We started at the yard at North Vancouver with a rebuilt RS18 and worked our way along the main line to Prince George. We got a brief look at the Royal Hudson along Howe Sound, then concentrated on the freights which are mostly led by the C40-8CM cowls, which we thought were handsome units. The scenery was just magnificent, especially the Fraser Canyon north of Lillooet, making for some stunning views of the trains clinging to the mountainside. We were thrilled to find a pair of C-420's switching at Prince George, and couldn't resist a quick trip to Tacheeda to catch CN handing a coal train over to the electrics This is a fascinating and unique railroad, you'll Iike it as much as we did.

In addition to ex CV GP9's, GATX MP15's and GP4O's we see CN GP4OL's in the splendid winter scenery of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

The New England Central

THE NEW ENGLAND CENTRAL

New England's newest. We chased the southbound job south out of Palmer the weekend after startup, in February 1995, then again a couple of weeks later in some fairly brisk weather. We chased the northbound job out of Brattleboro in December and January, the latter being somewhat frigid at 20 below, but it made for some excellent photographic conditions. NEC's blue and orange units look great in the snow, and there are some earlier scenes of CV to show how it was.

MRL uses older, rebuilt power, SD4O's, SD45's, SD45-2's SD19's, GP9's, some in MRL's dark blue and some still in the original RR's colors, while BNSF uses anything they own. Taped in fall, 1997.

Wisconsin Central

WISCONSIN CENTRAL

One of our favorite locomotive types is the SD45 and it's variants, so since WC has lots of SD45's and some F45's, it seemed like a natural to shoot. WC was very nice to us, we got tours of the dispatchers office and shops at Stevens Point, and a tour of the shops at Fond du Lac. We caught a GP3O and SDL39 on Byron Hill, a taconite train on the hill with 2 SP AC's and 2 WC units, DM&IR SD9's, UP run through trains, lots of SD45's, some SD24's and an SD35, F45's and boy d0 they look good in WC paint, and a Saturn getting nailed by the local in Black Creek. Our best selling tape ever!
